Pulls outs are done!!!

A lot has happened since the last post but this project is finally done. We now have a more functional pantry. It took a couple Sunday mornings to get all the drawers finished with three layers of polyurethane. My friend who has showed me how to do all this was able to come over one morning and we installed the new drawers into the pantry.

Here are a few pics of the install process.

And I did help him with the install, so I did do stuff.
We wanted to make sure that our clearances were good so we decided to install only one set of slides to make sure everything would be ok.

Here are a few more pictures of Kirk installing the rest of the slides. My job was putting the rails on the individual drawers.

All done! I picked this order for the drawers for more functional reasons. The top is for cereal and larger boxed items. Next is the can drawer for willows food and things that we need to get to on a regular basis. Third drawer down is for smaller boxed items that are regularly used (cake mixes, stuffing, etc). The bottom two are for things that we keep on hand but don't use on a regular basis, or more bulk items.

I am working swing shifts so Stacey moved everything that was in the pantry back using the new drawers. I can say we have 150% more storage space than before. (we were using a small book shelf to hold things)
All Loaded up
I definitely have to thank Kirk who taught me how to make drawers and let me use his awesome wood shop to build these. The over all fit and finish of these drawers are great and I know I couldn't have done them with the tools that I have.
On to the next project!!!!

Broom Closet to Pantry

It's been quite a while since I posted anything here. Most of my time has been occupied with the little one that we brought into the world. That and working on projects around the house is not a comfortable in the winter, just too cold in the garage to work any amount of time.

I have been working with a friend from work on some pullout drawers that we are going to put in what used to be the broom closet. Considering this is my first real wood working project I am really happy with the way they are turning out so far.

We did one test drawer to see how it would look and fit etc. My friend did all the cutting etc and I was just the helper at this point.

My next visit he let me do all the cutting and setting up of he tools. This was the first time I ever used real wood tools.

It doesn't look like much but all the lumber was cut after the first visit.

The next visit is where they actually start to look like drawers. Had to do a dry fit to make sure things line up properly.

Here is the rest of the pile that I need to go through and make sure they too fit as they should  They all went together as they should so I started gluing things together.
Here is that first drawer glued and clamped.

After some adjusting all the drawers ended up dead square. Not too shabby for a rookie. I was able to get them all glued and sanded, they are just waiting on their finish.
I will make sure to do another update next weekend after I get one of them finished.
